MAP are an Added Value Partner (AVP) with ABB on automation products and as such ABB and MAP often work in a partnership on projects examples of these are:
- Cubicle builds – MAP operate as a subcontractor and build the cubicles to ABB’s design and normally MAP test the panels, ABB test the system and a FAT is conducted at MAP’s premises.
- Steel industry process such as Blast furnaces, MAP take on the material routing, weighing, batch to skip, discharge to furnace top and burdening to furnace and ABB handle the blast furnace instrumentation, blast furnace control, stoves, guns / drills, etc. MAP perform the role of partner in this case.
This particular project was for Liberty Merchant Bar in Scunthorpe and MAP was contracted to build the roller table variable speed drive cubicle suite. This mill consists of a re-heat furnace, multi-stand reducing mill along with cropping and packaging sections. The roller tables are part of the reducing mill and have multiple motors independently driven at a variable frequency. These are grouped in three tables and each run at different speeds so three VSD units were fitted each with their own set of protection for that table’s motors.
Stage 1 Design
ABB conducted the overall design choosing the components and design philosophy of the system. MAP were responsible for the Physical design along with the busbar ratings and system employed. Also MAP conducted the detailed engineering to interface the system into the existing Rolling Mill Control system. The design consisted of Incomer, 3 off variable speed drives, 3 off sine filters, and three sets of motor protections. One table can be run on 50HZ backup busbars.
Stage 2 Build
The incomer stage consisted of a cable reception area at the bottom, a compartment with an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) with control terminals brought out to terminals to the top compartment. The top compartment consisted of Metering, ACB terminations and remote I/O from the Rolling Mill Control system (ABB AC450RMC).
Stage 3 Factory Acceptance Testing
The factory acceptance was conducted at MAP’s premise at Birkenhead ant testing was conducted:
- Conforming of standards required
- Point to point testing
- Insulation testing
- Withstand test 3kv for 1 second
- Low resistance joint measurements
- Power up test complete with VSD testing
